Terroir

A traditional, fully organic-certified olive grove, where 25, 70, and even over 100-year-old olive trees coexist. The oil produced comes from the "Manaki of Argos" variety, native to the area, and exclusively from olive trees belonging to the family.

The clay soil, ideal for olive cultivation, along with the water table and the altitude of the hills (reaching up to 500 meters), contributes to creating a very favorable environment for olive cultivation, where olives are hand-picked.

Mando Kotsoni

Inspired by a land richly planted with olive trees and steeped in millennia of history, the Kotsonis family has been cultivating their olive trees for over four generations.

From the early 1900s, the taste of the estate's olive oil became particularly appreciated by consumers. Subsequently, the family, closely following advances in the production of quality olive oil, created the region's first mechanical and hydraulic oil press, considered the most modern for its time. This decision, a result of the Kotsonis family's love for the quality of their products, gave new impetus to both production and the development of the Estate. Since then, the family has dedicated itself to producing quality olive oil, thanks to the unique sensory qualities of the indigenous Manaki d'Argos variety.

In 2007, the Kotsonis estate evolved once more, dedicating a portion of its olive groves to organic farming, long before the widely publicized consumer craze for organic products. Thus, today, the Kotsonis family uses the most advanced extraction methods while maintaining the same objective for four generations: to respect the land by giving it the care it deserves and to obtain the best possible result.

The Peloponnese, a land of olive trees for 5,000 years, also continues to practice the famous Greek "philoxenia." If you have the opportunity, visit the Kotsonis Estate and meet Mado Kotsonis, the current manager, who will introduce you to her olive grove through the oleotourism activities offered. Booking in advance is highly recommended.

Sensory Experience

Early harvest organic oil

This single-varietal Manaki offers a very fresh and green olfactory phase, followed by a sweet, fruity, and not at all bitter taste, with notes of almonds, artichoke, and freshly cut grass.

It finishes with a very pronounced and persistent pungency when tasted neat, which is not at all unpleasant when added to dishes.

How should I store my olive oil?

The three enemies of extra virgin olive oil are heat, air, and light...

  1. Choose opaque bottles (never transparent!) and avoid direct contact with light.
  2. Keep your oil in a dark, cool place and avoid exposing it to a heat source if not necessary (oven or other cooking area).
  3. Depending on your consumption rate, try not to keep too many half-used bottles for too long (the air inside accelerates oil oxidation). A few weeks is still okay.

Filtered or unfiltered, which oil to choose?

My recommendation: always choose filtered olive oil.

Suspended particles (residues of skin, pulp, or pit) accelerate the natural oxidation of the oil and contribute to a faster degradation of its aromatic qualities and its polyphenol content.
