The Spanish Atherosclerosis Society (SEA) has presented its 2024 update of the "Recommendations on lifestyle and cardiovascular prevention" , highlighting the Mediterranean diet as a cornerstone for reducing cardiovascular risks.
Mediterranean diet and sustainability
Dr. Emilio Ros points out that the consumption of extra virgin olive oil (EVOO) and the Mediterranean diet, rich in healthy fats, significantly reduce heart attacks and strokes, according to the PREDIMED and CORDIOPREV studies. In addition, this diet is sustainable and environmentally friendly, an essential asset for the planet.
Key points
Extra virgin olive oil (EVOO): rich in antioxidants, ideal for daily use in cooking or raw
Ultra-processed foods: Some, like whole grains and some dairy products, provide benefits.
Sweeteners: Artificially sweetened beverages should be avoided due to their link to increased cardiovascular risk.
Coffee: consumed in moderation (up to 5 cups), it is beneficial if it is without added sugar.
Dairy products and cheeses: even whole or fatty, they can be consumed in moderation without increasing cardiovascular risks.
Food for all
The document highlights the importance of the Mediterranean diet to maintain health and build a sustainable future. Integrating EVOO into daily life improves our quality of life and protects our heart.
